A lot of top antivirus providers offer a bootable recovery disk that can be used to clean your computer after an infected. These are Linux-based programs that can be used to cleanse a computer infected with malware, if it’s unable to start up or can’t be scanned by an antivirus program that runs on Windows. For simplicity, I recommend the Kaspersky disk (though it will not work on certain Dell systems).
Alternately, you can avail the same set of features from the Avira and ESET rescue disks which also feature a graphical user interface however, they require either a CD or USB device to start. Both options can analyze and detect any malware on your system. However, their virus definitions may not be updated as data room services frequently as the rescue disks based on Linux.
The Trend Micro Rescue Disk is another excellent choice. It’s also among the smallest disks on this list, at about 70MB. It doesn’t come with a graphic user interface but it works quickly and offers several options for customization. This includes the capability to scan and mount specific volume volumes, files and even specific folders.
Additionally, you can obtain an excellent virus scan from the Comodo rescue disk although it’s not quite as flexibility of the Linux-based options above. It’s an extremely effective tool for detecting and eliminating the type of viruses that hide in Windows files, and thereby preventing detection by the standard antivirus software. You can use a text-only interface or a full-graphical interface. You can also run a smart scan or a custom scan.
